So against my better judgement with income, I decided to splurge a bit and purchase Spore after seeing Kevin Rose’s Tweet about it. So I went up to the local Wal*Mart and purchased the box edition of Spore…if I had more money I would have gotten the Galactic Version (for the poster, obviously). So it was Sunday, but after a weekend of fun I had to do some homework before I got to Spore-ing.
Spore is a great game so far.
I have a 1st Edition MacBook (Late 06 edition) and the graphics card is a GMA950, built-in chipset. Awhile ago I tried to use the Creature Creator, but I would just get the so-called “spinning galaxy of death,” where the game would not load, but show a slow, spinning galaxy. So obviously this was a problem for the actual game of Spore for Mac.
Enter Windows Vista.
So I fired up Boot Camp and since for some reason the system requirements for Spore are lower on PC than Mac (stupid porting) and installed this highly anticipated game. It installed no problem and I was ready to play.
As expected, at first you start out by picking and naming your planet (or randomly generating one) and start out as a small microbe also called Cell Stage. From there you choose early on whether you want to eat meat or eat algae particles. Being the belligerent person I am, I decided to chase smaller organisms and follow Carnivore path (ahh Darwinism at its finest). Eventually, after much swimming and looking like a tiny squid, I evolved into a little land creature. As time went on and missions came up (such as befriending other creatures to make allies or annhiliating them) and I collected “pieces” for the next evolution, such as arms, legs, weapons (like horns) etc. Here’s a picture of my species in the Creature Stage. Pretty neat huh? He’s kind of like a praying mantis with the evidence of a past sea creature. You can see all of my evolutions at my Sporepedia site.
I had trouble deciding how I wanted to evolve and didn’t really know how to make my creature “fatter” so as my first attempt its not bad. I’m in Tribal Stage right now which I can only describe as a mix of WoW and Age of Empires. Its totally awesome and I’ll probably update this as soon as I get further.
